excessive daytime sleepiness hypersomniaRitalin for Idiopathic Hypersomnia?

I recently underwent a Polysomnography (Sleep Test). Based on the results, my doctor diagnosed me with Idiopathic Hypersomnia (excessive daytime sleepiness). My doctor prescribed Methylin (Ritalin) ER 20MG, 2 pills each morning. 2 weeks later, at my next appointment, I told him that I did notice a change - I was more awake, alert, and less sleepy. However, the effects of the medication would wear off within 3-4 hours and I would go back to being extremely sleepy. I asked him if there were any other stimulant medications whose effects would last longer. He said "no," and that there were no medications that would treat what I have better than Ritalin. He increased my dosage to 3 pills a day - 2 in the morning and one at noon. It has been nearly two weeks and my next appointment is in a couple of days. The eexcessive daytime sleepiness hypersomniaxtra pill does not seem to make much of a difference, which brings me to my question - Are there any other medications, besides Ritalin, that could possibly work better for me?
Methylphenidate(Ritalin), and Dextroamphetamine are the most commonly prescribed medications. Dextroamphetamine has a slower onset than Ritalin. Ask about Modafinil, it has shown to produce good results in patients with idiopathic hypersomnia.
I have used Ritalin for IH, I found that it made me a bit jittery but it did help keep me awake.

I have a friend with hypersomnia. He takes adderall (twice a day I think) and it works for him.
ask about an extended release or maybe an amphetamine like Adderall
I also take Ritalin for IH and like you the 2 pills in am help a lot. After that the pm oexcessive daytime sleepiness hypersomnianes do not do as well, I think it is because by that time I am on 'go faster'. I have still been known to fall over asleep if I sat down for a few minutes in the pm meetings (embarrassing!!). I used to be on a drug called Cylert which was wonderful. I could never have asked for better, then apparently some medical bulletin came out to the drs. to monitor Cylert users liver function very closely. Whatever it did to someone, apparently the drs. do not want to risk it again.
You may want to ask your dr. about it anyway and see what his thinking is. Hope you find a good combination soon.
Have you tried to increase your level of excersice drinking less coffee if you drink it and increase your fresh fruit and vegetables plus water. I feel they give out ritlin too easy now.
